"I grew up on a farm with no modern conveniences and handwork was a way of live. I’ve always loved making things ever since I was a kid."

Michael Hosaluk

Michael Hosaluk is recognized in Canada and internationally as one of the most creative wood ‘turners’. Born in Invernay, Saskatchewan, Hosaluk is self-taught. He crafted his own education by inviting experts to come and teach him. Hosaluk started as a cabinet maker, then furniture maker and now is known for his elegant, often humorous and colourful sculptures. He has a reverence for wood and finding ways to work with what is unique in each piece is what drives him. Using a variety of wood turning techniques, he incorporates concepts, designs and materials from nature and a variety of cultures. Hosaluk’s work includes functional vessels, furniture and sculptural pieces.

In 2004, he was awarded the Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor's Award for Innovation in the Arts. Hosaluk is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Saskatchewan Crafts Council. Hosaluk was active on the Steering and Advisory Committees of the Furniture Society. Since 1982, he has been the coordinator of the biennial International Wood Furniture/Turning Conference.

Hosaluk's work has been exhibited throughout Canada, in Europe, China, Japan, Australia and the United States. He has lectured and demonstrated extensively throughout Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, France, Norway and Israel.
